BIOGRAPHY

Widely regarded as one of South Africa's leading concert pianists, CHRISTOPHER DUIGAN has been recognized as a 'South African piano icon' and 'national musical treasure' (Classic Feel June 2009). He has performed extensively with all leading South African orchestras including the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic, Cape Philharmonic, Eastern Cape Philharmonic, National Youth and Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestras in a repertoire of more than 25 concerti. In recital he has developed a popular following through his innovative presentation and programming of a broad and eclectic taste in music.

International engagements in June 2013 include those in London at Steinway House, St James' Piccadilly and St Barnabas. Previous London performances included South Africa House and at the Edinburgh Festival 2001 and 2003 at the invitation of the Royal Overseas League (ROSL) where he was broadcast live on BBC Radio 3. Recent engagements in South Africa include recitals at the Brooklyn Theatre (Pretoria), Casa Labia in Cape Town, the Mandela Capture Site in Howick, ClassicFM Soiree, Johannesburg, Steinway Hall/Centre for the Book in Cape Town, at the Hilton Arts Festival and the Classic Music Festival in Franschhoek.

In recent years he has been a featured soloist in several concerto performances in the Pietermaritzburg and Durban City Halls with the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra. Christopher Duigan has an unprecedented large following in South Africa through the broadcast of his CD recordings which are frequently aired on ClassicFM and Fine Music Radio.

In March 2007 he shared the stage with the cream of South African pianists for the launch of Steinway and Sons in South Africa. Three years later he became one of only five pianists in South African history to be invited to be a 'Steinway Artist', joining an exclusive company of renowned international musicians.

Based in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands he is committed to promoting concert performance, both his own and those of others, locally and further afield. As producer and impresario he is the director of the widely acclaimed MUSIC REVIVAL which he established in 1997. Major projects now include the Concert Series at the Hilton Arts Festival, the Franschhoek Classic Music Festival and a series of performances by the Kwa-Zulu Natal Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition Music Revival brings numerous recitals and chamber music performances to various communities in KZN and the Cape Winelands.

Through this ground-breaking work, Duigan has created new audiences, built an unusually large and loyal following and re-examined many of the norms of concert performance. His crossover presentations combining virtuoso classical repertoire with selections of jazz, classic ragtime, traditional and 'Nuevo' tango and contemporary film music have been particularly enthusiastically received. This ground-breaking work as an independent classical entrepreneur has attracted much attention internationally, particularly that of renowned author and observer of trends affecting the future of classical music worldwide, Greg Sandow. Sandow now includes Duigan's story in his own teaching curriculum at the Juilliard School of Music in New York.

Under the Music Revival banner Christopher Duigan has produced numerous performance opportunities and collaborations with some of South Africa's leading artists including sopranos Angela Gilbert and Bronwen Forbay, baritones Federico Freschi and Njabulo Madlala, and musicians and ensembles from the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra, including the Kerimov Trio. He has developed unique and creative artistic partnerships with Maxine Matthews (saxophone), classical guitarist James Grace, and he maintained an ongoing project of regular performances with London-based Joanne Rozario (clarinet and saxophone) including a critically acclaimed CD 'Close Your Eyes and Listen'

Christopher Duigan began piano studies with Anette Kerkovius in Pietermaritzburg at the age of seven. He studied at the University of Natal with Isabella Stengel, the University of Cape Town with Lamar Crowson and Albie van Schalkwyk, graduating with an M Mus (Performance) in 1994, and at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM) in Manchester with Brazilian virtuoso Arnaldo Cohen. At the RNCM he was awarded the Professional Performer's Diploma (PPRNCM) and won first prize in the prestigious RNCM Recital Prize for Pianists. In addition he received the UNISA Overseas Scholarship Competition (1994), Crossly/Kramer Scholarships for International Study from UCT, 1st prize in the Adolph Hallis Piano Competition (1996), awards for the best South African pianist in the UNISA International Piano Competition (1996) and the Cape Town Symphony's Joseph Lan Award for his performance of the Bartok Piano Concerto No 3 (1994). He has participated in master classes at Dartington Summer School with Stephen Kovacevich and at the Mozarteum, Salzburg.

In 2010 Christopher Duigan presented 'Celebrating Chopin', two recital programme marking the 200th anniversary of Frederic Chopin's birth, in more than 30 performances including four performances at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown. The following year he presented two recital programmes on the 200th anniversary of the birth Franz Liszt in a number of concerts including an appearance at Steinway Hall/Centre for the Book, Cape Town.
