AUGUST  - FRANZ LISZT: THE ULTIMATE PIANO VIRTUOSO

Christopher Duigan (piano) can be heard in a programme of music by the ultimate piano virtuoso,  Franz Liszt (1811-86). Born in Hungary Liszt never spoke Hungarian and was said to have received a 'kiss' of acknowledgement from the great Beethoven in Vienna age 11. He was inspired by fellow composers Berlioz to create a world of musical fantasy, by Paganini to dazzle with 'devilish  technique', and by Chopin to seduce the hearts and souls of his audiences with poetry for the piano. He took minor religious orders in his later life, partially fulfilling his dream of becoming a priest.  He rewrote major orchestral works including the nine symphonies of Beethoven for solo piano and is said to have played them more effectively than any orchestra. He invented the 'piano recital' and established many of the norms of the concert experience still practiced to this day. This includes the practice of pianists playing the compositions of others from memory and turning  the piano 'side-on' to the audience to enhance the acoustic propulsion of the piano.  Apparently this was also so audiences could admire his noble profile. His concerts  were a series of public triumphs and he swept all of Europe before him (including touring Spain, Portugal, Turkey, Russia, England, France Austria  and Turkey) before retiring from concert life age 36.  When asked why he hadn’t written the story of his life, Liszt famously replied, ‘because I was too busy living it’.  Christopher Duigan plays a stellar selection of celebrated and dazzling Liszt compositions including the popular  'Liebestraum', 'La campanella', Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2,  and 'Un sospiro’ in a thrilling introduction to the life and music of Liszt!

David Salleras and Christopher Duigan IN CONCERT

Since his first visit in October 2012, David Salleras has been collaborating on a project of concerts and recorded albums with Christopher Duigan. Salleras, who lives in Barcelona, Spain has attracted international attention through his fluency in a variety of musical styles. His innovative compositions, which incorporate traditional flamenco idioms with contemporary and avant-garde performing techniques, are performed by saxophonists worldwide.

Duigan, meanwhile, is widely regarded as one of South Africa’s leading concert pianists has developed a popular following through his innovative Music Revival concerts. For this series, the two musicians will perform works from the traditional saxophone repertoire by Jules Demersseman, JS Bach, Darius Milahaud’s Scaramouche and music from Spanish composer/saxophonist by Pedro Itturalde. Itturalde’s Suite Hellenique traditionally offers pianist and saxophonist plenty of opportunity to explore a wide range of dynamic interplay through a variety of musical styles.

Also on the programme will be Salleras and Duigan’s own creative arrangements of music by Astor Piazzolla, Salleras’ own solo Caprices, and Duigan’s compositions from the albums  Indigo and Midnight Blue.

Ave Maria: The Rachmaninoff Cello Sonate
Christopher Duigan (piano) with Aristide du Plessis ( cello)

      FEB CELLO JPG.jpg

Brilliant young cellist Aristide du Plessis joins Christopher Duigan in the next of Music Revival’s monthly concerts. The centerpiece is Sergei Rachmaninoff’s magnificent   Sonate for  cello and piano Op 19. This will be coupled with a selection on instrumental settings of Ave Maria - by Bach/Gonoud, Giulio Caccini, Franz Schubert and Argentine tango composer Astor Piazzolla.

This unusual coupling can feel seen as an acknowledgment of the lyrical and deeply religious, chant- like melodies in Rachmaninoff's music.

One of Rachmaninoffs  most popular works, the cello sonata was composed at the same time as the celebrated Piano Concerto No 2  Op 18 and Two Piano Suite  shortly after the composer suffered a major breakdown and depression.  The process of composing these works proved to be cathartic and pivotal in the composer’s recovery. It is widely seen as one of the  greatest compositional outpourings in history of music.

Du Plessis is currently Co-Principal of the Kznpo and was heard to great acclaim in the Symphony Season in the Saint-Saens cello concerto last November. Duigan, a Steinway Artist,  is regarded as one is South Africa’s foremost concert pianists and maintains a busy schedule of recital and concerts performances across South Africa. Du  Plessis and Duigan have worked together on a number of projects in recent years. Their programme  titled ‘Ave Maria : The Rachmaninoff Cello Sonata’  will be presented by Duigan’s Music Revival in several venues across Kzn in February.

Listen here to the music featured in this concert!

George Gershwin's Songbook, including 18 Songs, transcribed for piano by the composer himself. Performed by Marc-André Hamelin, live in concert. The songs are: 01. Swanee 0:01 02. Nobody but you 0:38 03. I'll build a Stairway to Paradise 1:30 04. Do it again 2:11 05. Fascinating Rhythm 3:36 06.
WOW. George Gershwin had some ridiculous fingers. This is, for the most part, faithful to Gershwin's 2-piano score. He plays this as a duo with himself (Gershwin actually overdubbed himself playing both parts). Thanks to Jack Gibbons for the correct information about this recording.

Christopher Duigan opens the year's programme with a concise overview of the piano music of George Gershwin.  Loved by audiences of classical, jazz and popular music Gershwin's holds a unique place as a crossover composer.  Celebrating his contribution to the 'classical' piano repertoire Duigan plays 'Three Preludes' (1924) ,  the iconic 'Rhapsody in Blue' and the 'Gershwin Songbook'.  This virtuoso selection of 19 compact and delightful improvisations by Gershwin of his own popular songs, provides a whirlwind  pianistic tour through the songs of the composer. Included are 'Fascinating  Rhythm', 'The Man I Love', 'S'wonderful' and 'I Got Rhythm' .  Duigan completes the programme with other ragtime music by Scott Joplin and novelty solos 'Dizzy Fingers' ( Zez Confrey) and ' Nola' (Felix Arndt).

      Melvin Peters/Jeff Robinson Duo

JAZZ DUO TAG NOV 17 copy.jpg

Melvin Peters and Jeff Robinson are household names on the Durban jazz scene. They have performed together for several years in various combinations, and their experience and versatility contribute towards being able to push the musical boundaries. For their upcoming performance at the Tatham Art Gallery, they will focus primarily on creative versions of well-known jazz standards, such as All The Things You Are, Stella By Starlight and In Your Own Sweet Way, to name but a few.  The programme, which will be quite varied, will also feature a few original compositions by Melvin Peters, as well as a tribute to our South African jazz luminaries.

The duo combination offers a fresh perspective and necessitates a high level of creativity of the musicians. It also affords the performers greater freedom to explore the art of jazz improvisation within this context.  Jeff and Melvin have both been classically trained and have developed a strong rapport between them. Their musical synergy allows them to draw on musical elements and nuances from various genres spontaneously. Audiences in Pietermaritzburg have become accustomed to listening to them within the Melvin Peters Quartet. Their duo concert promises to be engaging, however with good entertainment and educational value, as well as a few surprises along the way.

SWING INTO SPRING with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra and the waltzes of Johann Strauss!

      KZNPO_spring_concert_p4 copy.jpg

A bouquet of beautiful music is presented to local audiences when ’Swing into Spring’ comes to Pietermaritzburg.

Bringing to life a magnificent selection of music that celebrates and uplifts with tones of spring, new energy and rebirth, this much-anticipated concert of symphonic music will sooth many weary hearts with the music of “the waltz king” Johann Strauss II and the fresh Scandinavian moods of Edvard Grieg.

The KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra performs in the Pietermaritzburg City Hall, a city renowned for its rich floral and gardening heritage, on Friday, October 13 at 7.30 pm.

Presented by Christopher Duigan’s Music Revival in association the KZN Philharmonic and sponsored by MayFord seeds, ‘Swing into Spring’ is another in the long list of highly successful productions with the renowned KZN Philharmonic Orchestra at the City Hall.

“We have chosen a selection of flowing, elegant and graceful music that will bring the audience head-long into an exuberant celebration of spring.  We also see this as a culmination of a sequence of events that involves the city’s floral heritage with 'Open Gardens' and 'Garden Show' traditionally held at this time of year,” said Music Revival’s Christopher Duigan.

The concert includes a selection of Strauss waltzes, usually associated with that most elegant of cities, Vienna, a city also associated with its magnificent floral vistas.  This includes Johann Strauss II 'Tales from the Vienna Woods Waltz' and ‘Voices of Spring’ along with the 'Tristch Trasch’ Polka.

Edvard Grieg’s ‘Wedding Day at Troldhaugen’, ‘Morning Mood' from 'Peer Gynt' and 'Norwegian Dances' will also be performed by the sixty-player orchestra along with Tchaikovsky’s ‘Waltz of the Flowers’, a must for any floral-themed concert.

The grand sweep of Tchaikosvky’s music will carry through into the opening moment of his celebrated Piano Concerto No 1. It will be performed by local pianist and Steinway artist, Duigan. The work is regarded as one of the most dazzling piano compositions ever written, and renowned for its soaring opening melody.

The KZN Philharmonic Orchestra will be conducted by Naume Rousine.

The concert also serves as the final concert in a week-long festival presented by Duigan’s Music Revival celebrating their 20th year.

Music Revival has presented and collaborated on numerous soirees, concerts and events in the city and further afield since its official founding by Duigan in October 1997.

As with all Music Revival concerts in the City Hall, every guest receives a complimentary souvenir programme.  The hall lighting, an integral part of the entertainment will be undertaken once again by Big Beat and complimentary drinks and eats are served at interval.  There is secure guarded parking in the City Hall precinct.

Make sure you book your tickets for ‘Swing into Spring’, which is also supported by the Msunduzi Municipality, CPW Printers, Business and Arts South Africa (BASA), Parklane SUPERSPAR, ABI and MayFord Seeds.

Tickets are R170 (R140 pensioners, R100 scholars) and R250 for premier seats.  Tickets are available at Ticketpros.co.za.

CLASSICAL MASTERPIECES - Schumann, Ravel, Rachmaninoff, Bach

      CHRISTOPHER DUIGAN (piano)

For a classical piano recital of masterworks in Music Revival's 20th year, Steinway pianist Christopher Duigan plays an engaging programme of varied masterpieces. These iconic compositions are pillars of the classical repertoire and Duigan brings his own unique view on these compositions to the fore. Principal works performance include Robert Schumann's 'Kreisleriana', one of composers  most enigmatic and fleeting compositions, and Maurice Ravel's 'Miroirs' - a set of five pieces that explore the layered sonority and colour of the piano.   JS Bach's 'Jesu, Joy of Mans Desiring' and 'Sheep May Safely Graze' together with music by Sergei Rachmaninoff complete the programme.

Christopher Duigan turns his hand to a light-hearted selection of charming  popular classics in  'Songs My Mother Taught Me'.  Duigan has entertained local audiences with numerous performances  of beautiful piano music from the classical and popular repertoire.

With an emphasis on elegance, charm and grace, this selection of music evokes a bygone world of nostalgic classics, often associated with salon music and gatherings at the family piano.  The programme features a highly appealing selection of popular melodies. Included here are  ‘Beethoven’s 'Minuet in G', Brahms’s 'Waltz in A-flat', Dvorak's ‘Humoresque',  Rubenstein's 'Melody in F' and 'The Maiden's Prayer'.  The popular evergreens  'Parade of the Tin Soldier’,  'Rustle of Spring’  and 'The Teddy Bear's Picnic' bring this delightful selection to a jaunty close.

Virtuoso saxophonist David Salleras visits South Africa once again to tour with pianist Christopher Duigan. Since his first visit to South Africa in October 2012, Salleras has been collaborating on a project of concerts and recordings with Duigan. Salleras (who is based in Barcelona, Spain) has attracted international attention through his fluency in a variety of musical styles. In addition, his innovative compositions, which incorporate traditional flamenco idioms with contemporary and  avant-garde performing techniques are performed by saxophonists worldwide.

Their performance includes  works from the traditional saxophone repertoire by Jules Demersseman, JS Bach, Darius Milahaud’s ’Scaramouche’  and music from Spanish composer/saxophonist by Pedro Itturalde. Itturalde's 'Suite Hellenique' traditionally offer pianist and saxophonist plenty of opportunity to explore a wide range of dynamic interplay through a variety of musical styles.

A standard part of any programme in a Salleras/ Duigan performance includes their own creative arrangements of  music by  Argentina 'tango nuevo’  by Astor Piazzolla in addition to one of Salleras’ own solo ‘Caprices’ and Duigan's own composition as recorded on the albums ‘Indigo' and 'Midnight Blue’.

      SONGS OF THE ROSE
Tuesday 20 and Wednesday 21 June at 18:45
      Epworth Chapel
Tickets: R100 (Adults) and R60 (Scholars)
Booking is essential: Amanda Lamprecht at functions@epworth.co.za  or phone 033 846 25 76.

SONGS OF THE ROSE, featuring guest artist Christopher Duigan (piano), weaves together music by a number of South African composers. At the heart of the programme is a sacred cantata entitled Mother of God by Stephen Carletti. This eight movement work will be premiered by the Epworth High School Choir accompanied by string orchestra and piano in these two performances. This is the third Epworth commission in two years. Tying in with the theme of the cantata is an early Baroque setting of the Ave Maria by Italian composer, Giulio Caccini, and a piano improvisation on the Annunciation Carol. There are other works on the programme by Simon Bester, Christopher Duigan, Grant McLachlan and David Orr. A choral arrangement of Amanda McBroom’s popular song, The Rose, originally performed by Bette Midler, concludes the concert. Following an overwhelming public response to SONGS OF LIGHT in 2016, there will be two performances of SONGS OF THE ROSE. For tickets: contact Amanda Lamprecht at functions@epworth.co.za  or phone 033 846 25 76.

      THE FRENCH PIANO

Christopher Duigan plays a classical recital of French music by Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel and Jean-Phillippe Rameau with compositions drawing inspiration from the East, the exotic underworld, and reflections of the magical world that surrounds us. From the baroque harpsichord school of the 17th century  as represented by Rameau to the wonderful evocative,  richly hued and sensuous music of Ravel and Debussy, this programme includes popular gems ‘ Clair  de lune’, Satie’s  ‘Gymnopedie' and Ravel’s quixotic foray in Spanish music in 'Alborada del gracioso’.  A brief excursion into contemporary French piano music adds an evocative touch to the selection.

BEAUTIFUL music, performed by world class musicians, will take centre stage when the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra performs in the Pietermaritzburg City Hall on Friday, March 24 at 7.30 pm.
Presented by the KZN Philharmonic, in association with Christopher Duigan’s Music Revival and Parklane SuperSpar, the annual Symphony in the City, will feature solo performances by three of the orchestra's most outstanding young musicians: Aristide du Plessis (cello), Junnan Sun (clarinet) and Fifi Olifant (violin).

The orchestra will be conducted for the first time by the 'rising star’ of the local music world, young South African Brandon Phillips, director of orchestral activities at the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra.

“It’s a really beautiful programme we have chosen this year ,” said Music Revival’s Christopher Duigan, “one that not only features several soloists in exhilarating performances that stretch their capabilities to the extreme,  but a programme that also showcases the orchestra itself and its incomparable way of creating a lush, rich and luxurious tapestry off sound.

“Hearing a symphony orchestra of 60 professional, highly skilled musicians in full-flight, making music together in a beautiful acoustic such as we have in our City Hall, is surely one of the most awe-inspiring experiences possible. There is nothing ordinary about it! ”

The concert will feature the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra playing the Karelia Suite by Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, Rossini's Overture to The Silken Ladder and the haunting Pavane by French Romantic, Gabriel Faure.

Cellist Aristide du Plessis plays the first movement from the Dvorak Cello Concerto, one of the most inspired and passionate of cello solos, while Fifi Olifant plays the Adagio from Bruch's Scottish Fantasy, a broad symphonic collection based on traditional Scottish folk melodies.

Local pianist and Steinway artist, Duigan will be featured in the opening movement of the Beethoven Piano Concerto No 3, regarded as one of the composer's most mysterious, dramatic and dazzling piano compositions, designed to display his ability as pianist and composer.

Principal clarinet of the orchestra, Junnan Sun, will play two movements from the Clarinet Concerto No 1 by Weber, an exciting and gracefully energetic work, contrasting floating lyrical melodies with brilliant finger-twisting passages.

As with all Parklane/Music Revival concerts in the City Hall, every guest receives a complementary souvenir programme; the hall is beautifully presented with lighting by Big Beat; and complimentary drinks and eats are served at interval.

So, make sure you book your tickets for Symphony in the City, which is also supported by the Msunduzi Municipality, CPW Printers and ABI, now.

Tickets are R190 (R170 pensioners, R120 scholars) and R250 for premier seats.

      MARCH CONCERT
Christopher Duigan :  'Tales from Grandmother's Piano Album’

For the next installment of the monthly concerts,  pianist Christopher Duigan turns his hand to a light-hearted selection of charming  popular classics in 'Tales from Grandmother's Piano Album’.  Duigan has entertained local audiences with numerous evenings of beautiful piano music from the classical and popular repertoire.

With an emphasis on elegance, charm and grace this selection of music evokes a bygone world of nostalgic classics, often associated with salon music and evenings at the family piano.

"MY FAVOURITE MAGNIFICENT CLASSICS"  with CHRISTOPHER DUIGAN

For the opening concert of the 2017 series, and Music Revivals 20th year, Christopher Duigan plays an exhilarating programme of his favorite classical piano masterpieces. These uplifting and boldly positive compositions have formed a major part of his repertoire in numerous performances over the past 20 years.   Music Revival, established in October 1997, has grown from a series of small intimate concerts to a regular and dependable series of more than 100 concerts annually presented across KZN, in Johannesburg and the Cape Winelands, from home soirees to major festivals and symphony concerts.

Principal works on Duigan’s programme at the end of January includes George Frederic Handel's Chaconne in G HWV 435 and Ludwig van Beethoven’s exhilarating   “Waldstein" Sonata op 53. The 'Waldstein' is one of Beethoven's most iconic and reverred compositions. The second part of the programme features music by Claude Debussy  "Reflets dans l'eau" (Reflections in the water) and Liszt’s "Harmonies du soir" from his "Transcendental Etudes", a powerful and emotionally resplendent composition. The programme ends with the "Heroic" Polonaise in A-flat Op 53 by Frederic Chopin. The last work said to be one of the composer’s boldest compositions giving voice to a nations cry for freedom following the Russian invasion of Poland of 1831. This programme offers a stupendous start to the concerts in 2017!

Christopher Duigan plays Ludwig van Beethoven

Beethoven's musical output is often conveniently divided into three periods. In the first he uses the language of Viennese classicism established by earlier composers, above all Haydn and Mozart, with the emphasis on clarity, restraint, and balance. In the second period he moves beyond the conventions of classicism and writes with a bolder, more personal tone, often with very powerful surges toward moods of triumph, tragedy and transformation. In the third period, the earlier urgency gives way to moods that have been described by words such as ‘interior’, ‘contemplative’ and ‘visionary’. Christopher Duigan plays three sonatas from the canon of Beethoven's 32 Piano Sonatas that represent each of these periods: the light-hearted Sonata in F Op 10 No 2, the popular 'Moonlight' Sonata Op 27 no 2 and the Sonata in E Op 109 . Music by German romantic composers, who were highly influenced by Beethoven's legacy, Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms, complete the selection.

BEETHOVEN SERIES: ChristopherDuigan with Joanna Frankel (violin)  Junnan Sun (clarinet)  Aristide du Pleases (cello)   and the KZNPO String Quartet

BEETHOVEN I: The 'Kreutzer' and Franck for Violin and Piano
Acclaimed international violinist and KZN Philharmonic Concert-master, Joanna Frankel, joins Christopher Duigan (piano) in the opening concert of the Music Revival Concert Series. In the first of this Beethoven-focused series of concerts, they play one of the composer's crowning masterpieces, the Violin Sonata in A Op.47 ' Kreutzer'. Known for its challenging violin and piano parts, extreme emotional range, and length, the sonata was originally written for violinist George BrIdgetower, a noted British virtuoso of the day, born of Polish and West Indian parents. Beethoven later withdrew the dedication after a personal dispute following the first performance. He finally dedicated the work to the French virtuoso, Rodolphe Kreutzer, who thought the work unplayable and never performed it. In this concert, Frankel and Duigan pair the 'Kreutzer' with the Sonata in A major by Belgian-French Cesar Franck, one of the finest, most ecstatic and best loved sonatas for violin and piano.

BEETHOVEN II: Piano Concerto No 3 and Mozart
Like Mozart, and later Chopin, it would have been customary for Beethoven to perform his piano concertos in a 'reduced' version, especially when trying out a new work. Christopher Duigan is joined by the KZN Philharmonic Quartet in a performance of selections from one of these Mozart Concertos, in C major K415, as arranged by the composer, together with Beethoven's Piano Concerto No 3 in C minor. Although not a published arrangement by the composer himself, it offers rare insight and a fresh take on the music. As a composer, Beethoven experienced much success at the turn of the 19th century. He wrote his first two symphonies, his first set of string quartets, and the famous “Moonlight” Sonata. His encroaching deafness meant that his days as a performer were coming to an end; but when he wrote the Piano Concerto No. 3 in C minor, a dramatic and intense vehicle for his pianistic and compositional prowess, he was still able to play, acting as the soloist at the premiere in 1803.

BEETHOVEN III - The 'Moonlight' Sonata
Beethoven's musical output is often conveniently divided into three periods. In the first he uses the language of Viennese classicism established by earlier composers, above all Haydn and Mozart, with the emphasis on clarity, restraint, and balance. In the second period he moves beyond the conventions of classicism and writes with a bolder, more personal tone, often with very powerful surges toward moods of triumph, tragedy and transformation. In the third period, the earlier urgency gives way to moods that have been described by words such as ‘interior’, ‘contemplative’ and ‘visionary’. Christopher Duigan plays three sonatas from the canon of Beethoven's 32 Piano Sonatas that represent each of these periods: the light-hearted Sonata in F Op 10 No 2, the popular 'Moonlight' Sonata Op 27 no 2 and the Sonata in E Minor Op 90. Music by German romantic composers, who were highly influenced by Beethoven's legacy, Robert Schumann and Johannes Brahms, complete the selection.

BEETHOVEN IV - The Clarinet Trio and Saint-Saëns
Ending the Beethoven series, young musicians, Junnan Sun (clarinet) and Aristide du Plessis (cello), join Christopher Duigan in a spirited selection of music for clarinet, cello and piano. Beethoven wrote his Trio in B-flat Op. 11 in 1797 at the request of Joseph Beer, a noted clarinettist of the time, who considered it an insufficiently flashy vehicle for his talents and may never have performed it. Beethoven used a melody drawn from Joseph Weigl’s opera, L’Amor Mariner, in the variations of the finale of this trio. The tune was all the rage in Vienna at the time, to the point where it was hummed and whistled in the city’s streets, and gave the trio the nickname “Gassenhauer” (street tune). In contrast is Saint-Saëns’ Clarinet Sonata. In the last year of his life, at 85, Saint-Saëns was still active as a composer and conductor, travelling between Algiers and Paris. His last completed works were three sonatas, one each for oboe, clarinet, and bassoon. The programme is completed by Beethoven’s ebullient Sonata in A Major Op 69 - a tour de force of lyricism and brilliance and sees Beethoven at his most optimistic.

TWO GUITARS - James Grace and Jonathan Crossley
Acclaimed guitarists, James Grace and Jonathan Crossley, present an innovative and varied programme at the Hilton Arts Festival. Both artists are accomplished soloists and chamber musicians, maintaining full-time performing and teaching careers which regularly take them throughout Southern Africa, Europe and the UAE. In this concert, the duo will perform original works for two guitars by composers including the Italian, Ferdinando Carulli, and Julio Cesar Oliva, from Mexico, alongside arrangements of works by Manuel de Falla and Manuel Maria Ponce, among others. The concert is one of two free concerts at the Hilton Arts Festival sponsored by Marriott, The Income Specialists.

      THE MUSIC OF CHOPIN
Pianist, Christopher Duigan, performs the music of French-Polish pianist and composer, Frédéric Chopin. In the first of two free concerts at the Hilton Arts Festival sponsored by Marriott, The Income Specialists, this programme includes a representative selection of the composer's music: The Ballade No 3, Scherzo No.1 and nocturnes, mazurkas and waltzes. In this special presentation Duigan will also be discussing the insight he gained into Chopin's life and his music while on a trip to Warsaw, Poland and the Chopin Museum last year. Duigan, a Steinway Artist, has devoted much time to the study and performance of Chopin’s music in his professional career over the last 25 years and was invited to give two recital programmes of the composer’s music at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in 2010 on the 200th anniversary of the composer's birth.

Gershwin : Porgy and Bess – A Symphonic Picture
      Christopher Duigan -  Nos. 2 & 3 from 'Four Nocturnes' (2015)

THE music of George Gershwin takes centre stage when the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra takes to the stage of the Pietermaritzburg City Hall on Saturday, March 19 at 7.30 pm.

Presented in association with Parklane SUPERSPAR, Rhapsody in Blue will feature solo performances by David Salleras (saxophone ) and renowned concert pianist, Christopher Duigan (piano). The orchestra will be conducted by James Ross, director of orchestral activities at the University of Maryland in the United States.

“It’s a really exciting programme,” said Duigan, “because it is it mainly a Gershwin programme. I will be playing Rhapsody in Blue on the rebuilt Steinway and Sons Concert Grand Piano and the orchestra will be doing a suite for his opera Porgy and Bess, which includes songs like the hugely popular Summertime.”

The concert will feature the full KZN Philharmonic Orchestra, as well as extra saxophone players and a banjo player. “It is just beautiful music and the symphonic splendour of the whole Gershwin Suite is going to be amazing,” Duigan said.

Porgy and Bess is an English-language opera composed in 1934 by Gershwin, with a libretto written by DuBose Heyward and Ira Gershwin from Heyward's novel Porgy and later play of the same title.

The opera tells the story of Porgy, a disabled street-beggar living in the slums of Charleston, South Carolina, and his attempts to rescue Bess from the clutches of Crown, her violent and possessive lover, and Sportin' Life the drug dealer.

Porgy and Bess: A Symphonic Picture was arranged by Gershwin's good friend and sometimes assistant, Robert Russell Bennet,t in 1942 and includes most of the best-known songs from the opera.

Also on the programme is a performance of Japanese composer, Takashi Yoshimatsu’s Saxophone Concerto "Cyber Bird", Op. 59 (1994). It will include solos by saxophone maestro David Salleras, Duigan and Stéphane Péchoux, the orchestra’s principal percussionist.

“It’s a very jazzy piece, Eastern with a Japanese feel. It’s fresh, exciting and unique,” Duigan said of the work.

      compositions and Dave Brubeck hits.

Jazz pianist Darius Brubeck is taking a short break from the London scene
to spend some time in SA, and looks forward to playing with long-time
associate and American compatriot Mike Rossi. Mike has been on two CDs
with the UK-based “Darius Brubeck Quartet “and has often been featured
with the group on tour in the USA, UK, Europe and South Africa.

Although the pair go way back (they first met in the US in 1988) and have
performed in many bands together, Darius and Mike only played their first
full-length duo concert in Italy two years ago. This format features
popular jazz  with loads of variety, spontaneity, risk and mature
      professionalism.

      Symphony in the City

Parklane SUPERSPAR presents  ‘Symphony in the City: Organ Symphony’
      Pietermaritzburg City Hall
Friday 31 October at 7:30 pm.
Featuring the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra and soloists.  Jeremy Silver (conductor)
Tickets are R120 to R180 for adults with discount for pensioners and scholars/students  from Parklane Coffee Shop Tel. 033 342 3487.

Parklane SUPERSPAR presents the annual ‘Symphony in the City’ in the Pietermaritzburg City Hall on Friday 31 October at 7:30 pm. Featuring the KwaZulu-Natal Philharmonic Orchestra, the concert will include Camille Saint-Saëns‘ Symphony No 3 'Organ', one of  a few symphonic works that combines a full symphony orchestra with organ.

Speaking on this much anticipated event principal sponsor Cameron Mackenzie of Parklane SUPERSPAR said: " We have been inundated with requests from the concert-going public to feature the organ in the concerts we present at the City Hall.  The organ, built in 1901, is a visually imposing backdrop to any concert there.   It is reputedly one of the largest of its type in the world, the largest in the southern hemisphere and according to my research, the largest the renowned  organ builders Brindlay and Foster ever built.”

The KZN Philharmonic has not played this music in the Durban City Hall for many years despite staging their weekly Symphony Concerts there.  The Durban City Hall organ has been out of action for some time.  Mackenzie went on to say: “ We should be proud of our city assets and heritage.  We invite all from KZN and surrounding regions to come and hear the magnificence of the organ together with the vast instrumental forces of the orchestra."

Also featured in the concert are KZNPO Concert-master Joanna Frankel in Maurice Ravel's 'Tzigane' and Barcelona-based saxophonist David Salleras in three pieces by contemporary Argentine 'nuevo-tango' composer Astor Piazzolla.  Christopher Duigan, who has been collaborating with Salleras on numerous projects for over two years,  will join him at the piano.

Speaking on the choice of programme Duigan said  "I am excited by the sultry and intense energies in the first half of the concert which will contrast beautifully with the expansive and floating hymns-like melodies of the 'Organ' Symphony in the second".  Maritzburg-born organist Christopher Cockburn, who has a long association with the City Hall organ, will be the soloist in the Symphony. Jeremy Silver, London- based conductor who thrilled audiences locally in 'Vienna Nights' earlier this year, will be on the podium.

Tickets for the ‘Symphony in the City: Organ Symphony’  are available from Parklane  SUPERSPAR  Coffee Shop Tel. 033 342 3487.  Tickets are R120 to R180 for adults with discount for pensioners and scholars/students. As always  refreshments are included.

Secure patrolled parking is provided in the City Hall precinct, Bessie Head Library and Tatham Art Gallery.
