TWO STEINWAY ARTIST PIANO RECITALS at HILTON ARTS FESTIVAL

Saturday 14 September 11h00 and 14h45. Hilton College Chapel

HAF 2019 TWO copy 2.jpg

There are at least two opportunities to catch leading concert pianists and Steinway Artists, Music Revival’s Christopher Duigan and Charl du Plessis at the Hilton Arts Festival.

Duigan and Du Plessis will also be performing a concert at the Hilton Arts Festival taking place from 13 to 15 September. Enjoy a performance from leading South African pianist Charl Du Plessis. In this programme he plays a varied programme of music by Chopin, Piazzolla, Gershwin and his own improvisations. Charl du Plessis most recently made headlines when he became the first pianist ever to perform on top of Table Mountain. He rose to fame when
he was the youngest pianist in Africa to be named a Steinway Artist in 2010 and has since embarked on an international career working simultaneously as classical and jazz pianist and has illuminated the music of from Bach to Billy Joel for a new generation of listeners.

Duigan will be playing an outstanding selection of the music of the romantic piano poet, Frederic Chopin. Duigan plays music that highlights the bold, virtuosic and majestic elements of the composer’s music over the more readily expected elegant and atmospheric elements. Widely regarded as one of South Africa's leading concert pianists, Christopher Duigan was invited to become a 'Steinway Artist', joining an exclusive company of renowned international musicians. In December 2019 together with Spanish saxophonist David Salleras, Duigan was soloists with the Orquestra des Valles at the one of the world’s most prestigious concert venues, the Palau de la Musica, Barcelona. Their performance was repeated at the Enbdler Hall, Woordfees in Stellenbosch in March 2019. In July this year Christopher returned to play in England at the Latimer Music Festival, a series of concerts, programmed around a small of collective of musicians.
Duigan plays Saturday 14 September at 14h45 and du Plessis the same day at 11h00 both in the magnificent Hilton College Chapel.

For more info visit www.hiltonfestival.co.za for Duigan or hiltonfestival.co.za for du Plessis or contact the Festival Office on admin@hiltonfestival.co.za or 033 383 0127.

MUSIC REVIVAL’S MONTHLY KZN TOUR JUNE 2019
This month in June
This month we will present two programmes. One is the wonderful Trout Quintet by Franz Schubert presented in collaboration with The Friends of Music, Durban and the KZNPO Players.  This will be repeated in Kloof, Pietermaritzburg, Howick and Hilton (4 August).
Some of our venues and audiences are unfortunately not able to accommodate the logistics of this performance.  Christopher's home-studio Casa Mexicana, Musgrave Rd and Umhlanga will then see  Christopher play a solo piano classical programme previewing his performances to be given at the Latimer Music Festival in England this July.
We regret there will no Ballito concert this month due to the venue not being available for suitable dates. We hope you to see you at a one of other venues!

THE TROUT QUINTET with The Kerimov Trio and Friends

In June Christopher Duigan is joined by Elena and Boris Kerimov (violin and cello - the Kerimov Trio), with David Snaith (viola) and Jura Litvinenko (bass) to play Schubert’s evergreen ‘Trout Quintet’. The Kerimov Trio won a popular following in the founding days of Music Revival with numerous classical concerts and cafe performances across KZN. they were particularly popular in theor programmes of Eastern- European folk music. The Kerimov Trio were also featured in several of the country’s most prestigious concerts series including those in Pretoria, Cape Town, Johannesburg, and were regular visitors to the Grahamstown National Arts Festival. For this performance they include several of their most popular light classics including Brahms’ ‘Hungarian Dance No 5’, ‘Skylark’, ‘Hora di Mars’, Monti’s ‘Czardas’ , Massenet’s ‘Meditation’ from Thais, ‘Black Eyes’, ‘The Swan’, Caccini’s ‘Ave Maria’ and more.

Pianist Christopher Duigan performs an outstanding selection of the music of the supreme Romantic piano poet, Frederic Chopin (1810 - 1849) at Hilton College in the Memorial Hall on Sunday 9 June at 3:00 pm. This is the first of a series of concerts Duigan will present at Hilton College on Sundays,  every second month.

In ‘Magnificent Chopin’ Duigan plays music that highlights the bold, virtuosic and majestic elements of the composer’s music over the more readily expected  effusive, elegant and atmospheric elements, often seen as typical of Chopin’s music. The programme includes the Ballade No 3, and a selection of Etudes, Mazurkas, and Nocturnes and Chopin’s monumental Sonata No 3.

Christopher Duigan, a Steinway Artist, has devoted much time to the study and performance of Chopin’s music in his professional career over the last 25 years and was invited to give two recital programmes of the composer’s music at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown in 2010 on the 200th anniversary of the composer's birth.  Since 2016 he has given over 40 performances detailing the insight he gained into Chopin's life and his music while on a trip to Warsaw, Poland and the Chopin Museum.

In this unique double bill he is joined by Aristide Du Plessis (cello) to repeat part of their highly acclaimed programme 'Cello Song’. They include  Schumann’s 'Adagio and Allegro', the virtuoso 'Hungarian Fantasia' by David Popper and other selections that serve to highlight the lyrical aspects of the instrument.

After a recent concert in Johannesburg with the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra  critic Paul Boekkooi exclaimed of du Plessis:   “He is a remarkable musician and a born cellist.  It is obvious that for him virtuosity and technical display are never virtues on their own, but at all times they are applied with diligence and placed in the service of the composer and his music. This [Saint-Saëns] concerto has seldom sounded so wholesome and gripping as in the hands of this already illustrious instrumentalist, still in his late twenties.”

Don't miss tis opportunity to hear these outstanding South African musicians in concert.

‘Magnificent Chopin’ and 'Cello Song’  in Hilton College’s Memorial Hall on Sunday 9 June, starting at 3.00 pm.  Tickets: R150 includes refreshments at interval. There is secure parking. Seating is unreserved. Book at Webtickets.co.zaor  e-mail booking@musicrevival.co.za or 083 417 4473 (sms or WhatsApp only)  for more info.

“The Royal Symphony" at The Royal Show featuring the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra with Kutlwano Masote (conductor)
Sunday 26 May 2019 at 10h00 The Main Arena, Royal Show Grounds, Pietermaritzburg

The robust rhythms of marches and lilting sway of a waltz will have local audiences on their feet when the Royal Symphony enthrals with a magical compilation of rousing and elegant music performed by the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra.

The Royal Symphony Concert, now in its eighth year, is presented by The Royal Show in association with the KZN Philharmonic Orchestra and Music Revival, takes place on the morning of Sunday 26 May from 10h00 on the Great Stage of the Main Arena. Experience the pageantry of pomp, ceremony and splendour with toe-tapping rhythms and sweeping melodies under a sparkling, blue African sky.

The programme is conducted by South African Kutlwano Masote and introduced by Andy Capostagno. Well known as Super Sport commentator on everything from rugby to netball, Capostagno has a secret love for the classics and all things relating to musical trivia.

Born into a musical family in Soweto, Kutlwano Masote began violin lessons at an early age under the tutelage of his father, Michael, a respected music teacher and founder of the Soweto Symphony Orchestra.  After studying at the University of the Witwatersrand, he was awarded a scholarship by Yehudi Menuhin to further study cello and chamber music at the International Menuhin Music Academy in Switzerland. His affinity for cross-cultural music projects and performances has set him apart as a versatile music director and conductor. He is also an orchestrator and arranger of music not usually performed by orchestras. To this end he has orchestrated music by hip hop artists Khuli Chana and Kwesta, soul singers Kabomo and Maleh as well as Lira, Sibongile Khumalo and Zonke

Masote has enjoyed a twenty-year career as an on-air broadcaster at both Classic FM and SAfm, sharing his love for classical music with audiences of those platforms.   The programme includes the popular ‘Radetzky' March by Strauss, 'Light Cavalry Overture' by Franz von Suppe, the celebrated Waltz from Gonoud’s ‘Faust’ and 'Gold and Silver Waltz' by Viennese icon Franz Lehar.

Extensive seating will be provided in the Main Arena and on the Grandstands. It is recommended that hats and/or umbrellas are included in your ‘bring alongs’ should it be a warm day.

The concert has been made possible with support from First National Bank, ECR, The Witness and Coca-Cola.
Daily gate fees for the Royal Show apply.

In April Christopher Duigan is joined by Aristide Du Plessis (cello) for MUSIC REVIVAL CONCERTS Monthly KZN Tour, from Ballito to Howick. In this programme they include  Schumann’s Adagio and Allegro, the virtuoso Hungarian Fantasia by David Popper and Schubert’s ‘Arpeggione’ Sonata, a classical favourite of audiences world-wide.  Other selections include a series of songs that serve to highlight the lyrical aspects of the instrument.

After a recent concert in Johannesburg with the Johannesburg Philharmonic Orchestra  critic Paul Boekkooi exclaimed "Is Aristide du Plessis our pre-eminent ‘cellist?”.  He went on to say  “He is a remarkable musician and a born cellist.

Don't miss tis opportunity to hear this outstanding  young South African  musician in a series of solos concerts in KZN, with Christopher Duigan at the piano. See below for booking details

James Grace’s brand-new album Andaluza – Music of Spain III

KZN JAN 19 JPEG.jpg

Acclaimed guitarist and three-time SAMA nominee JAMES GRACE makes a welcome return to KZN with his brand new album Andaluza - Music of Spain III. Continuing his exploration of original and transcribed Spanish music for the guitar, James will perform Joaquin Turina's evocative Fandanguillo, one of the first works originally commissioned by and composed for Andres Segovia. Also included in the programme are a selection of works by Eduardo Sainz de la Maza, brother of Regino Sainz de la Maza who was the dedicatee of Joaquin Rodrigo's Concerto de Aranjuez. Rodrigo also features in the programme, with the virtuosic and hauntingly beautiful Invocacion y Danza, a homage to Manuel de Falla.

For this concert tour and in the recording studio James plays on a locally-built classical guitar by leading South African luthier Hans van den Berg.

The CD Andaluza – Music of Spain III will be on sale for R150. All major forms of payment accepted.
